CHAPTER SEVEN
I was awakened by the sound of my cell phone going off. I didn’t answer or return any of the calls because I just figured it was calls from the many people I had networked with at the party. I noticed that Leslie had fallen asleep on my lap and I didn’t want to wake her, after all it was only 7:16AM in the morning. So I carefully lifted her head off of my lap and placed a pillow underneath it. I thought about knocking on Maleek’s bedroom door but then decided against it. I just wanted to go home, take a shower and brush my teeth to get the liquor taste out of my mouth. As I was waiting on the elevator my phone rang again. It was Twanna, so I answered it.
“Hey party animal you’re up early ain’t you?” I joked.
“Prince. Where the fuck are you? Where have you been? Get to my house as soon as possible. Prince please hurry!” responded Twanna. She was crying hysterically.
“Whoa! Slow down Twanna. What the fuck happened?” I said.
“Prince please… just hurry!” Twanna pleaded before hanging up.
As the elevator arrived, I got on and repeatedly pressed the lobby button as if that would get me to the ground floor any quicker. It felt like it was taking forever and a day to reach the lobby. When it finally did arrive, I ran over to the valet booth and found that Muhammad was fast asleep. I banged on window to wake him up and when he did I let him have it.
“What the fuck are you doing sleeping? Hurry up and get me my fucking car!”
Muhammad gave me a look like I was crazy. I made a mental note to apologize later but right now I was in a rush. When he brought the car around, I jumped in without tipping him and peeled off in the direction of the Mid Town Tunnel. I turned on the radio just in time to hear Power 105.1’s DJ Envy finishing up a statement about Twanna’s party being shot up. He went on to say that he couldn’t confirm the rumors but the word is that Twanna, Reggie, and five others were shot and killed and many more injured. I knew that Twanna was okay because she had called me but I wasn’t sure about everyone else. It must have been a mixture of me driving like a bat out of hell and the light Sunday morning traffic that got me to Twanna’s house in Long Island in no time at all.
I wasn’t surprised by the lack of media outside of her home because Twanna had just bought this house about a week ago. As I approached, I saw Two-Times outside with a couple of the security guys. I hurried by without even acknowledging them and entered the house to found Twanna sitting at her dining room table sobbing uncontrollably. As I walked up she looked somewhat startled when I called her name and tapped her on the shoulder.
